Malaysia Is Becoming Southeast Asian Drone Security Laboratory

Terra Drone

Terra Drone signed with DRB-HICOM’s DEFTECH at the end of August to use Malaysia as its ASEAN defence hub for maritime and border ISR, site security around ports and power plants, counter-UAS and interceptors, plus the unglamorous aftermarket of training and repair. The same day Tokyo said it would spin those interceptors toward civilian critical infrastructure. DEFTECH already builds Gempita 8x8s and keeps Malaysian metal. Japan’s OSA relationship with Kuala Lumpur is the diplomatic grease. The geography is the product. A peninsula that faces the Malacca Strait and the southern South China Sea does not need a brochure. It needs a watch that works in rain and a response that does not wait for a capital city.

Border and sea surveillance is a government customer. Airport and plant protection is a mixed one. Export to Thailand or the Philippines is a third. If the hub is only a warehouse for Japanese airframes, Malaysia has bought a logo. If DEFTECH learns to integrate sensors and keep interceptors flying, the country becomes a laboratory the rest of ASEAN can copy or refuse.

A partnership is agreement is more like a letter of intent for it to be a squadron the Malaysian Armed Forces have to fly a demonstration. But obvious Malaysia is going to be the laboratory for drone defence systems.
