UK’s Tactical And Small-Drone Acquisitions

Tekever AR5

On 16 September the UK Ministry of Defence signed Project Corvus with up to £400m over a decade for Tekever’s AR5, a long-endurance surveillance drone to replace Watchkeeper. Six airframes first, as many as 24 by 2029, built in Swindon. Tekever talks of more than 50,000 hours in Ukraine since 2022 and a 50kg sensor load that can stay up for many hours. A second contract track buys small drones for soldiers who will launch them from a ditch. The announcement counts aircraft. The shortage will be people who can launch, recover, patch, recharge and read a picture while someone tries to jam the link.

Watchkeeper sat in hangars when the unit that owned it could not keep it current. The AR5 will fail the same way if the doctrine treats the airframe as the fleet. Batteries, catapults or runways, datalinks and software drops are the inventory that matters. Ukraine’s attrition rate argues for treating some hulls as consumable and outrunning losses at the factory. Repairable hulls argue for a technician in the same mud as the aircraft. The MoD has not said which mix Corvus will fund or what share of the £400m sits after delivery.

That technician is no longer a back-shop trade. A tactical drone needs someone who can fly a pattern, know when the box is lying, swap a cell, flash a radio and write an intelligence note without putting the next sortie on an open frequency. Small-drone teams multiply the same skills at platoon level. The training day looks more like a ground crew’s than a fast-jet pilot’s who has to manoeuvre weather, NOTAMs of a sort, a pre-flight that is mostly batteries and encryption, a recovery that is a wet field and a laptop. Software literacy is not optional. Neither is the discipline not to emit.

Britain can assemble AR5s in Wiltshire and still import the cells, sensors and chips. A late software drop grounds an orbit as surely as a cracked spar. A link that dies under jamming leaves a camera on a hill. The Army will put 24 on a slide. The serviceable number on a Tuesday in the rain is the number of people who can turn a screwdriver and a code key before the weather closes. That roster is the acquisition still unsigned.
