Before Air Taxis Carry Passengers, Someone Must Train The Pilots And Simulators Are Getting Ready First

Air-taxi coverage still treats the aircraft and the landing pad as the whole problem. The quieter constraint is sitting in a windowless room. Someone has to convert a pilot, rehearse a rejected take-off over a city, practise a battery or flight-control failure, and then prove to a regulator that the instructor, the device and the syllabus match the machine. Commercial eVTOL passenger service remains some distance away. Training hardware is already being built for the people who will fly it.

AXIS Flight Simulation, the Styrian company best known for Level D business-jet and turboprop devices, has spent 2026 talking about that next cockpit. In March it argued that virtual procedure trainers would matter as powered-lift rules cleared a path and as new types arrived beside conventional traffic. Its AX-D Flex design swaps a cockpit into a common motion and visual mothership, which is a practical answer if a training centre does not yet know which eVTOL type will win the first city route. AXIS has not displaced the rotary incumbents. Helicopter type training still runs through OEM academies and the large simulator houses. Leonardo and CAE’s Rotorsim joint venture is adding a second AW139 Level D full-flight simulator in Philadelphia for 2027. Leonardo and FlightSafety plan the first AW189 Level D device in the Americas at Lafayette. Airbus H125 training is moving into certified VR devices from Loft Dynamics and from Reiser working with TRU Simulation’s Veris platform. Those machines exist because the helicopter market already has types, instructors and recurrent demand. eVTOL does not.

That is why the helicopter pilot looks like the first talent pool and why that assumption is only half right. A helicopter pilot already lives in the low-altitude world of brownout, wires, confined areas and visual references that change with wind. An eVTOL pilot will also live there, plus a glass cockpit that behaves more like a fly-by-wire aeroplane, plus energy management that has no autorotation equivalent if the batteries are gone, plus automation that may fly the departure until the pilot has to take it back over a stadium. Conversion is not a type rating photocopied from an H125. It is a new mix of handling, supervision and emergency logic. Regulators will want that mix practised in a device they have qualified, with instructors they have approved, on a syllabus that matches the aircraft’s certification basis. Building the aircraft without building that chain leaves operators waiting for a slot in a room that does not exist.

India, Japan, Korea, the Gulf and Australia will feel the gap first if they try to launch medical or tourism eVTOL before a local training centre exists. Sending every candidate to Europe or the United States is possible for a prototype fleet. It is not a network. The operators who treat simulator hours, instructor standards and type-data packages as infrastructure, the same way they treat vertiports and chargers, will be the ones who can actually open a route. The rest will have aircraft and nowhere legal to practise falling out of the sky.
