An Air Taxi Begins With Ordinary Passengers

Joby

Joby started a week of eVTOL demonstration flights in Dallas-Fort Worth from 10 September under the FAA’s eVTOL Integration Pilot Program. Texas DOT’s Project Nexus is the local wrapper. The preproduction prototype, N545JX, is not type-certified. Duffy watched the Alliance Airport kickoff. The plan included a round trip into DFW’s controlled airspace and an FBO pad, plus urban sites around the metroplex. Beta flew in the same Texas frame. Joby has leased space at Perot Field. The FAA wants procedures, not another pretty vertical takeoff. This is still a demo. Nobody should write it as a scheduled service.

The next test is a passenger who is not an engineer. Booking and identity who is allowed on a prototype pad? How early must they arrive when there is no TSA hall? What screening exists when the terminal is an FBO lounge? Weather will cancel more flights than a press kit admits, eVTOL energy margins and wind limits are not a 787’s. Bags will be small. Batteries will need a charger that is actually plugged in, not a slide about megawatts. Neighbours will hear the departure whether the brochure says quiet or not. If the landing site is a crane or a NOTAM, the aircraft needs a diversion and the passenger needs a car. After touchdown the trip is unfinished until ground transport exists. That chain is the product. The airframe is only one link.

Dallas is a generous laboratory, it has big airports, highway sprawl, political air cover. Singapore, Seoul, Tokyo, Osaka and Indian metros would offer denser demand and a harder exam and monsoon and heat, tightly boxed airspace, rooftop politics, communities that already live under approach paths. An air taxi that cannot survive a missed pad in a wet afternoon or in a rough weather, it is the test that it has yet to undergo.
