Air India Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners: A Fresh Chapter in Fleet Transformation

Air India continues its ambitious post-privatization makeover with the arrival of brand-new, custom-built Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners featuring the airline’s striking new livery. These 'tailor-made' or 'line-fit' aircraft represent a leap forward, as interiors and configurations are installed directly on Boeing’s production line rather than retrofitted later.

The first aircraft call sign VT-AWA, arrived in Delhi in January 2026 from Boeing’s Everett facility. The second, VT-AWB, landed in Delhi on May 16, 2026, after a non-stop delivery flight from Boeing’s Charleston, South Carolina plant. Both wear Air India’s refreshed branding and incorporate bespoke cabin designs inspired by Indian heritage, including jaali-inspired patterns and wellness-themed mood lighting.

What is 'Tailor-Made' (Line-Fit)

Unlike earlier 787s that received post-delivery modifications, these new 787-9s are purpose-built for Air India from the factory. This allows for optimized weight, better integration of systems, and a consistent premium product across the fleet. The configuration includes a modern three-class layout with approximately 296 seats. Business Class suites with full-flat beds and direct aisle access, enhanced Premium Economy, and upgraded Economy. Features include Bluetooth headphone pairing, wireless charging, and signature design elements.
