$30 Billion King Salman International Airport & Aerotropolis To Reposition Riyadh

In the vast sands of Riyadh, a monumental vision is steadily rising from the desert floor, King Salman International Airport, a project destined to become one of the largest and most transformative aviation hubs on Earth. Announced by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in November 2022 as a cornerstone of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, this audacious development is more than just an airport, it is an entire aerotropolis designed to reposition Riyadh as a global gateway connecting three continents.

Spanning an incredible 57 square kilometres, equivalent to a small city, the airport will eventually feature six parallel runways, multiple world-class terminals, vast cargo facilities, and integrated urban development. Construction momentum accelerated significantly in 2025, with major works underway including the third runway. Phase 1 elements are advancing rapidly, setting the stage for initial operations around 2030.

The financial commitment behind this dream is staggering. The core airport project carries an estimated investment of $30 billion with some broader estimates placing the total ecosystem value between $30–50 billion. Backed primarily by Saudi Arabia’s powerful Public Investment Fund (PIF) through the King Salman International Airport Development Company, the project is attracting global expertise from firms like Foster + Partners (master planner), Bechtel (terminal delivery partner), Jacobs, Parsons, and others.

But the true economic multiplier effect goes far beyond the initial outlay. Once fully operational, King Salman International Airport is projected to inject 27 billion Saudi Riyals (approximately $7.2 billion) annually into Saudi Arabia’s non-oil GDP. It will create around 103,000 direct and indirect jobs, fueling growth in aviation, logistics, tourism, retail, and related sectors. This massive economic catalyst supports Riyadh’s ambition to become one of the world’s top ten city economies and accommodate a population of 15–20 million by 2030.

The development plans are equally breathtaking. Beyond the aviation infrastructure capable of handling 120 million passengers by 2030 and scaling to 185 million passengers plus 3.5 million tons of cargo annually by 2050, the project includes a vibrant 12 square kilometre mixed-use aerotropolis. This integrated city-within-a-city will feature residential communities, retail destinations, recreational spaces, hotels, logistics parks, and commercial real estate. Recent moves, including signing multiple Memoranda of Understanding with leading national developers, aim to accelerate high-value private investment in these zones.

Sustainability is woven into every aspect of the design, with ambitions for LEED Platinum certification through renewable energy integration, green infrastructure, and smart technologies. Passengers will enjoy seamless journeys in culturally inspired terminals that blend Saudi heritage with futuristic efficiency, while the broader ecosystem will drive tourism, trade, and connectivity across the Kingdom.

As construction progresses through the late 2020s, King Salman International Airport stands as a powerful symbol of Saudi Arabia’s bold future, desert-born colossus that will not only handle millions of travelers but also generate waves of investment, opportunity, and prosperity for generations to come. What began as a visionary announcement is now transforming into steel, concrete, and economic reality, promising to elevate Riyadh and the entire nation onto the global stage.
