Udon Thani Is Officially International, Now Needs International Market

Lucky Air

Thailand’s civil aviation authority added Udon Thani Airport to the national list of airports allowed to handle international flights on 4 September. That brings the authorised list to eleven, beside Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Krabi, Hat Yai, Samui, Surat Thani and U-Tapao. A public aerodrome operating certificate was due on 2 September. The first airline to use the new stamp is Lucky Air. From 8 September to 22 October it will fly Kunming to Udon Thani twice a week, Tuesdays and Thursdays, on a 189-seat Boeing 737-800. Flight 8L867 leaves Kunming at 16.50 and arrives at 17.50. 8L868 leaves Udon Thani at 18.50 and reaches Kunming at 21.50. The Department of Airports is giving Lucky Air a 50 percent cut on landing and parking fees for a year. The service is a charter under temporary traffic rights, not a year-round scheduled franchise. Permission is not a market. A twice-weekly Yunnan flight until late October is a test, not a network.

Udon Thani sits in Isaan, close to the Lao border and closer still to the idea of an Indochina gateway that Bangkok has sold for years. Chinese tour groups, visiting families, cross-border traders and weekenders who already drive to Nong Khai could fill a 737 if hotels, buses and operators are ready on the ground. Kunming is a useful origin. It is not Beijing or Shanghai. The question is whether those passengers want Udon Thani itself or only a cheaper door into Thailand’s northeast before they bounce to Bangkok. Immigration desks, customs, coaches and a second airline will decide that faster than a CAAT gazette. Thai VietJet has talked about using Udon Thani as a spoke toward Japan, Taiwan and Vietnam through Suvarnabhumi. Talk is not metal. Regional airports across ASEAN collect international designations, fee holidays and a first charter, then spend winters with an empty sterile corridor. If Lucky Air’s loads hold and the charter becomes a winter schedule, Udon Thani will have earned the word international. If the last 8L868 in October leaves half empty, the airport will still be international on paper and domestic in the timetable.
