The Small Engine Inside The Widebody Economy

MRO Asia Pacific

China Airlines has given REVIMA a long-term Power-by-the-Hour deal for the APS5000 auxiliary power units on its Boeing 787s, announced at MRO Asia-Pacific in Singapore on 22 September. The package covers APU and line-replaceable-unit repairs plus predictive maintenance. REVIMA is an independent shop, not the airframer and not the engine OEM that sold the propulsion. EVA Air signed a similar APS5000 PBTH with the same house years earlier. The pattern is the story: an Asian 787 operator sending the smallest engine on the aeroplane to a specialist that lives by availability, not by assembling the jet.

On the ground it makes electricity and bleed air when the main engines are quiet, the cabin cooling before boarding, packs for a hot stand, start air for the first engine, hotel power when the GPU is late or the stand has none. A dead APU on a 40-degree ramp is a delayed boarding, a sweaty cabin and a dispatcher staring at MEL minutes. Both CF6-class or GEnx fans can be perfect. The aeroplane still will not push on time.

That is why exchange pools beat a cheap overhaul quote. A shop visit that takes the unit to France, REVIMA’s published APU work situated in Normandy, adds crate time, export paper and a customs clock. The airline’s real product is a serviceable spare on the Taipei or Taoyuan shelf the night the installed unit comes off. PBTH is a bet that the vendor will own that float. Predictive chatter (Predicare and the rest of REVIMA’s menu) only matters if it moves a removal to a night when a spare is already in the country.

Heat makes the arithmetic worse. Gulf and South Asian turns already lean on the APU harder than a temperate European bank. Ground-power trucks help until they do not. Line mechanics know the unit that will not start at 02:00 is a widebody that misses a slot. China Airlines did not buy romance. It bought a logistics answer for a component passengers never name and operations cannot ignore.
